Fair question. Every business does things a little differently. These are the questions that usually matter most.
“We make many similar units. Can the system handle repetition without losing detail?”
Yes. Templates hold the structure for repeating element types while each project and each unit keeps its own costs. That combination matters in precast because you are somewhere between manufacturing and construction: the elements repeat, but the project they belong to is unique, and the commercial result belongs to the project. Costing at both levels is what lets you see whether a particular element type is profitable independently of whether the project was.
“Can we plan work around moulds and casting beds?”
Yes — this is exactly what Work Areas are for in a precast yard. A mould, a bed or a casting area is a physical constraint with a fixed cycle, and your output is governed by it far more than by labour. Scheduling against the bed rather than the crew is what makes a delivery programme credible, because adding people does not create another casting position.
“How do we handle curing time in the schedule?”
Curing is elapsed time on the bed rather than labour, and it needs to be visible as occupancy rather than as work. Structure the schedule so the bed is committed for the full cycle including cure, not just the pour. Yards that plan on pour hours alone systematically overcommit, because the bed the next element needs is still holding yesterday’s.
“Can we track reinforcement, cast-in items and bought-in materials?”
Yes. Reinforcement, ferrules, lifters, cast-in plates and fixings purchase against the project or issue from stock. Cast-in items are worth particular attention because they are individually cheap, easily substituted in error, and extremely expensive to get wrong — an element cast with the wrong lifter is scrap. Keeping the purchase on the job at least puts the specified item and the ordered item in the same record.
“Can we keep drawings, approvals and element schedules with the project?”
Yes, as project documents. Precast runs on shop drawings that go out for engineer and builder approval and come back marked up, and the approved revision governs what is cast. Working from a superseded drawing in precast is not rework — it is a scrapped element and a lost bed cycle. Keeping the current set attached to the project is a disproportionately cheap defence.
“Can we manage transport and craneage?”
As project purchases against the job. Precast transport is substantial, heavily regulated on size and weight, and booked against a site delivery window you do not control. Keeping the commitment on the project means that when the site pushes the delivery, the cost consequence is attached to the job rather than arriving separately as a haulage invoice nobody can allocate.
“Site dates move constantly. Does that break the plan?”
No. Work can be rescheduled without disturbing the job record underneath. The particular difficulty in precast is that your production is driven by a site erection sequence that changes while your beds are already committed — a delayed level means finished elements occupying yard space and the next pour with nowhere to go. Keeping the schedule and the job separate means the plan can move as often as the site does while the cost history stays intact.
“Can we track labour and project margin?”
Yes. Labour records against the project and its tasks, alongside materials, transport and bought-in items, and compares against what was allowed. In precast the useful measure is frequently margin per bed cycle rather than margin per project, because bed capacity is the constraint — a profitable job that occupies beds for six weeks may be worse than two that occupy them for two. That comparison needs both the cost and the occupancy recorded.
“Can we handle repairs, rework and rejected elements?”
Record them against the job. Rejected or repaired elements are a real and routinely unmeasured cost in precast, and because rejection rates vary enormously by element type and by crew, the aggregate is the useful number. Yards that absorb rework into general production hours usually believe their rejection rate is lower than it is.
