At a glance
The short version
| Evaluation | WorkGuru | ServiceM8 |
|---|---|---|
| Platform type | A mature industrial operations platform covering quoting, scheduling, purchasing, stock, timesheets and job costing. All your operational and communications data in one place, with the general ledger left to your accounting system. | Mobile-first field-service and job-management platform built around enquiries, quoting, dispatch, mobile technicians, job cards, client communication, recurring work, assets, invoicing and payments. |
| Best fit | Fabrication, engineering, manufacturing and project or workshop businesses, where the margin is won or lost on labour, materials and rework rather than on job volume. | Small and midsized trade and service businesses running a relatively high volume of field jobs, where fast dispatch, technician mobility, client communication and low-friction administration matter most. |
| Pricing model | Published per-user pricing in AUD and GBP, with modules you turn on as you need them, so you can price it before you talk to us. | Published Australian plans from Free through Premium Plus. Paid plans use job-volume limits rather than per-user pricing and include unlimited users, with advanced features limited to particular tiers. |
| Implementation | DIY, WorkGuru-assisted or partner implementation. | Designed for rapid self-setup, with guided in-product learning and independent ServiceM8 Partners available for implementation help or training. |
| Strongest when | The business needs a job-first industrial operating system connecting CRM, quoting, projects, workshop work, labour, purchasing, stock and live job profitability. | The operation revolves around mobile technicians, dispatch, short-to-medium field jobs, recurring service, customer assets, automated client communication and getting paid quickly in the field. |
Platform purpose and scope
What each platform is for
WorkGuru
WorkGuru runs the work between winning a job and knowing what it made. Quote it, schedule it, buy for it, book time and materials against it, and see the real cost while the job is still open rather than after invoicing. It is deliberately not an accounting system, a payroll system or a dispatch board — those connect to it.
ServiceM8
ServiceM8 is a mobile-first field-service platform built around getting enquiries into the system, booking and dispatching technicians, completing jobs on site, communicating with customers, capturing forms and asset history, invoicing and taking payment. It is exceptionally well aligned to plumbing, electrical, HVAC, cleaning, maintenance and other field-service businesses. It overlaps with WorkGuru around quoting, jobs, labour, costing and invoicing, but its centre of gravity is the technician and dispatch board rather than the workshop, substantial project structure, procurement, production or standalone inventory control.
Best-fit use cases
- Choose WorkGuru when the core problem is coordinating sales, substantial jobs/projects, workshop work, purchasing, labour, stock and margin in one operational flow.
- Choose ServiceM8 when small and mid-sized field-service businesses with high job volume and mobile technicians.
- Where both fit, compare the real operating model rather than feature count: workshop vs field/site, job/project vs product/warehouse, and the implementation depth you are prepared to take on.
Industries and typical customers
WorkGuru is focused on fabrication, engineering, custom manufacturing, structural steel, mining services, heavy repair and related industrial project/workshop businesses. ServiceM8: Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, cleaning, locksmith, pest, lawn care, appliance repair and other field services.

Pricing, rollout and what it really costs
WorkGuru pricing, implementation and ownership
Current WorkGuru AUD pricing: $350/month platform fee including the first 10 users; additional users $35/month; Inventory $300/month; Workflow Automations $200/month; Advanced Forms $150/month. DIY onboarding is free; guided onboarding and partner implementation are available for businesses that want more help. Re-confirm commercial pricing before publication.
ServiceM8 pricing
ServiceM8 publishes AU plans from free through A$349/month, with unlimited users on paid tiers and job-volume limits by plan. Pricing information was checked on 21 August 2026 and should be re-checked immediately before publication.
Implementation and time to value
ServiceM8 supports self-setup and also provides access to implementation partners for setup and training. WorkGuru can be implemented DIY, with WorkGuru-assisted onboarding, or through an implementation partner depending on the size and complexity of the business.
Total cost and complexity of ownership
Compare more than licence price: software subscription, implementation, data migration, integrations, training, support, internal administration and the cost of additional systems still required around the core platform. A cheaper licence can be more expensive if it leaves the business running critical workflows elsewhere; a broader ERP/MRP can be more expensive if the extra depth is not actually needed.
Switching
Moving from ServiceM8 to WorkGuru
Already using ServiceM8? Scope migration around the information that still matters: customers and contacts, products, suppliers, open quotes, current jobs, WIP, documents and relevant job history. The exact import path depends on the export formats and APIs available from ServiceM8. Historical data that does not need to stay live can remain archived. WorkGuru should confirm migration scope, timing and cost before a customer commits.
The verdict
The matrix is evidence. This is the buying advice.
Where ServiceM8 is stronger
- ServiceM8 is the stronger fit when dispatching and coordinating mobile field technicians is the centre of the business rather than workshop planning
- Its mobile-first workflow is particularly strong for technicians completing job cards, notes, photos, forms, asset records, quoting, invoicing and payment while on site
- The Dispatch Board, field staff location/scheduling workflows, booking confirmations, reminders, on-the-way messages and client arrival tracking are deeply aligned to high-volume service businesses
- Offline mobile operation is a clear advantage for technicians working in poor-connectivity environments, although some actions still require a connection
- Recurring service and asset history are core field-service workflows, making ServiceM8 particularly strong for maintenance-oriented trades
- ServiceM8 Pay provides a mature quote-to-cash experience with deposits, field payments and online invoice payment links
- For small field-service teams, self-setup and unlimited users on paid plans can make deployment extremely low friction
Where WorkGuru is stronger
- WorkGuru is the stronger fit when jobs extend into substantial projects, workshop stages and production-style execution rather than primarily technician visits
- WorkGuru has materially deeper native inventory operations: stock locations, multiple warehouses, stocktakes, serial/batch/FIFO tracking, shortages and stock consumption against projects are part of its product scope rather than being driven by an accounting integration
- Purchasing is much deeper natively in WorkGuru, including purchase orders, supplier management and project purchasing; ServiceM8 explicitly says it does not have built-in purchase-order generation
- WorkGuru’s Work Areas are designed around bays, machines and departments, fundamentally different from ServiceM8’s technician/dispatch scheduling model
- WorkGuru provides project and task Kanban boards plus Gantt/project planning, whereas current ServiceM8 material does not substantiate equivalent dedicated Kanban or Gantt workflows
- WorkGuru’s project variation and project financial-control model is better aligned to substantial fabricated or engineered jobs rather than shorter field-service work
- Its workflow automation model is broader and more general-purpose; ServiceM8’s standard Automation add-on is powerful but centred on a defined set of communication workflows
Choose ServiceM8 if…
Choose ServiceM8 when its strongest areas are central to the operating model: best-in-class mobile field workflow for small service teams; dispatch, client booking and on-the-way communications; recurring jobs and asset service history.
Choose WorkGuru if…
Choose WorkGuru when the business needs an industrial operations platform that connects CRM and quoting to substantial projects, workshop planning, purchasing, inventory, labour, invoicing and job profitability without adopting a broader ERP than the business needs.
FAQs
ServiceM8 questions
Is ServiceM8 a direct WorkGuru competitor?
In some businesses, yes. The overlap depends on the operating model. This page is designed to show both the shared capability and where each platform is intentionally stronger.
Can we migrate from ServiceM8 to WorkGuru?
Yes, migration can be scoped as part of implementation. The exact data, timing and cost depend on the exports/APIs available from ServiceM8 and what history you want to retain.
Is WorkGuru cheaper?
Not necessarily in every scenario. Compare current licence pricing plus implementation, modules, integrations and the rest of the software stack. ServiceM8 pricing on this page is dated 21 August 2026.
Does WorkGuru do the setup?
It can. WorkGuru supports DIY setup, WorkGuru-assisted onboarding and partner implementation depending on complexity.
Where is ServiceM8 stronger than WorkGuru?
See the adjacent-strength section above. We deliberately include capabilities such as field service, MRP, warehousing, construction takeoffs or specialist steel workflows where the competing platform may be broader or deeper.
Method
How this comparison was prepared
This comparison was prepared by WorkGuru. ServiceM8 product claims are based on publicly available official product information checked on 21 August 2026. We use the same evaluation framework across every vendor and explicitly identify areas where the competing platform may be stronger.
Customer proof
[CUSTOMER PROOF REQUIRED] Prefer a WorkGuru customer who evaluated or moved from ServiceM8. Capture the previous operating problem, why WorkGuru was selected, implementation experience and measurable result.
Checked 3 September 2026. WorkGuru verdicts are preserved from the supplied comparison page. ServiceM8 was re-audited against current first-party product documentation.
Scope note: ServiceM8 capabilities vary by plan and add-on. Purchase Orders are not native: ServiceM8 explicitly directs users to Developer Partner solutions and lists MyPO. Stock levels are synced from accounting systems rather than maintained by an independent ServiceM8 inventory ledger.
